Father Eugene Welch, SJ (September 11, 1928 to October 23, 2009)

It is with great sorrow that we announce the sad demise of Father Eugene Welch, S.J. on October 23, 2009 at the age of 81. May God bless this kind soul with eternal peace.

Father Welch was born on September 11, 1928 in Pittsburgh and joined the Society of Jesus in 1947. He came to India as a scholastic in 1951 and was ordained as a Priest in 1960.

Father Welch had two tenures at De Nobili School. The first one was for a brief period from 1961 to 1962 while the second tenure lasted from 1976 to 1980. He taught Moral Science at De Nobili School in 1977 and 1978. The boys in his class liked him immensely because he allowed the "Wally Ricky Band" to perform in the Moral Science Class much to the amusement of everyone.

Earlier, Father Welch had served as the Principal of Loyola School, Jamshedpur after Father Hess moved to De Nobili School from there.

Father Welch is best known for his pioneering agricultural programs for the villagers near St. Xavier's School, Lupungutu. He orgaized the teachers and students of the school to meet the local village headmen (or "mukhiya" as they are known in Hindi) to focus on the social needs of the villagers. Lupungutu is a small village located 1.5 miles across the river from Chaibasa - a town in the Hazaribagh district in the state of Jharkhand.

According to Father Hess, "Eugene Welch was one of the brightest minds he had met".
